THE WILD DIVINE
WITH STEPH MAC
Creativity has often been placed into a narrow category.
Something artists do.
Something musicians do.
Something designers do.
Something reserved for people who are naturally imaginative or visually talented.
But creativity is far more fundamental than that.
Creativity is the ability to perceive possibility.
It is the ability to imagine something that does not yet exist and bring it into reality.
Every person is creative.
Every organisation requires creativity.
Every solution, invention, relationship and transformation begins with a creative act.
Creativity is not simply the creation of art.
Creativity is the foundation of human evolution.
The way we solve problems.
The way we adapt.
The way we communicate.
The way we build the future.
In a world experiencing rapid change, creativity is no longer optional.
It is one of our greatest forms of intelligence.
The myth that creativity belongs only to artists
Many people grow up believing they are either creative or they are not.
They may remember being told they were not good at drawing.
They may compare themselves to people who have artistic skills.
They may believe creativity requires a certain personality or talent.
This misunderstanding causes many people to disconnect from one of the most powerful parts of themselves.
Creativity is not measured by artistic ability.
A person does not need to paint, write poetry or make music to be creative.
A parent finding a new way to support their child is creative.
A business owner developing a new approach is creative.
A scientist exploring an unknown question is creative.
A community finding solutions to complex challenges is creative.
Creativity is not about producing something beautiful.
It is about creating something meaningful.
Creativity is how humans adapt
Throughout history, humans have survived and evolved because of creativity.
We created tools.
We developed languages.
We built communities.
We imagined different ways of living.
Every advancement began as an idea before it became reality.
Someone had to see beyond what currently existed.
This is the essence of creativity.
The ability to enter the unknown.
The ability to ask:
What else is possible?
What could this become?
What has not yet been imagined?
This is why creativity is such a valuable skill for leaders, organisations and communities.
The future cannot be created using only the thinking patterns of the past.
Why organisations need creative intelligence
Many organisations focus heavily on efficiency.
Systems.
Processes.
Measurement.
Performance.
These are important.
However, efficiency alone cannot create the future.
Organisations must also be able to imagine.
They must be able to respond to change.
They must be able to innovate.
They must be able to see opportunities where others see limitations.
Creative intelligence allows organisations to move beyond repeating what has always been done.
It creates space for:
New ideas.
Better solutions.
Different perspectives.
Meaningful change.
The organisations that thrive in uncertain times are often those that can adapt creatively.
Creativity requires curiosity
At the heart of creativity is curiosity.
Curiosity allows us to approach life with openness.
Instead of immediately deciding that something is impossible, curiosity asks what might be possible.
Instead of rejecting unfamiliar ideas, curiosity explores them.
Instead of needing certainty before beginning, curiosity allows experimentation.
Many people lose access to creativity because they become disconnected from curiosity.
They become focused on getting things right.
They fear mistakes.
They prioritise approval over exploration.
But creativity does not emerge from perfection.
Creativity emerges from relationship.
A relationship with ideas.
A relationship with uncertainty.
A relationship with ourselves.
Why perfectionism blocks creativity
One of the greatest barriers to creativity is perfectionism.
Perfectionism often appears as a desire for excellence.
However, underneath it there can be fear.
Fear of judgement.
Fear of failure.
Fear of not being enough.
Creative work requires movement.
It requires trying.
It requires allowing something imperfect to exist before it becomes refined.
A seed does not become a tree instantly.
A first idea does not become a finished vision immediately.
The creative process requires space.
It requires patience.
It requires trust.
When people are trapped by perfectionism, they often stop before they begin.
They judge the idea before it has the chance to develop.
They reject the first version instead of allowing it to become something more.
Creativity needs permission to unfold.
Creativity and the nervous system
Creativity is deeply connected to the nervous system.
When people feel unsafe, the brain naturally prioritises protection.
It looks for threats.
It seeks certainty.
It narrows focus.
This response is valuable in situations where survival is required.
However, creativity requires expansion.
It requires openness.
It requires the ability to explore possibilities.
When the nervous system is regulated, people often experience greater access to imagination, intuition and flexible thinking.
This is why environments that support wellbeing often produce greater creativity.
People create more freely when they feel safe enough to explore.
Why creativity reconnects us with ourselves
Creativity is not only about producing something external.
It is also a way of understanding ourselves.
When we create, we reveal parts of ourselves.
Our preferences.
Our emotions.
Our stories.
Our perspectives.
Art can become a conversation between the conscious and unconscious parts of ourselves.
Sometimes we discover what we feel through the process of making.
We understand ourselves more deeply through what emerges.
This is why creative practices are used across many therapeutic and transformational approaches.
The creative process allows things to become visible.
Healing through creative expression
Many people have learned to suppress their creativity.
They have prioritised responsibility.
Productivity.
Achievement.
Meeting expectations.
Over time, they may lose connection with the parts of themselves that feel playful, curious and alive.
Creative expression can become a pathway back.
It can reconnect people with joy.
With imagination.
With identity.
With possibility.
The purpose is not to create something perfect.
The purpose is to create a relationship with yourself.
Creativity as leadership
The leaders of the future will need more than technical knowledge.
They will need imagination.
They will need emotional intelligence.
They will need the ability to navigate uncertainty.
Creative leadership requires the willingness to see beyond existing limitations.
It requires asking deeper questions.
It requires listening.
It requires being open to emergence.
A creative leader understands that solutions are not always found by pushing harder.
Sometimes they are found by creating space.
The creative intelligence within every person
Creativity is not something reserved for a chosen few.
It is part of being human.
It exists in the way we dream.
The way we problem solve.
The way we connect.
The way we imagine a different future.
When people reconnect with their creativity, they often reconnect with themselves.
They remember a part of who they are that existed before they learned to limit themselves.
Creativity becomes a doorway.
A doorway into possibility.
A doorway into expression.
A doorway into transformation.
